Multi-Tool with an Engine

THE TOOL

The 1890s saw Karl Elsener develop the Modell 1890, the first iteration of the Swiss Army Knife consisting of a blade, can-opener, awl, and a screwdriver. It was designed to be a universal tool for the Swiss Army back in the day as it allows them to open their food rations and maintain their standard rifle, the Schmidt-Rubin.

Now, the multi-tools made by Elsener have since left the military spectrum and entered the civilian world.

But how about for Earth-moving jobs? To be efficient in these tasks, you need tools better than a blade or a shovel, you need something bigger. This is where the 3DX Backhoe Loader comes Hin; the multi-tool with the engine.

By combining three machines, an excavator (or backhoe), a loading shovel, and a tractor, it became one of the most important innovations in recent history.

IT’S MODULAR

With its modular design, it made the Backhoe Loader a highly versatile machine capable of adapting to different processes on a worksite, much like a Swiss Army Knife but has interchangeable attachments.

Buckets

One of the basic functions of a Backhoe Loader is, of course, to dig. These are designed to be easily mounted via its Quickhitch System and have replaceable parts that can extend their service life and durability. They come in a variety of buckets with different purposes. Let’s dig in.

  • General Purpose Buckets - These are the commonly used attachments for digging. Their buckets range from 0.054m3 to 0.286m3 in terms of capacity.
  • Heavy Duty - These buckets are designed for strenuous work and tough terrain. The buckets are fitted with additional wear strips. Their buckets range from 0.054m3 to 0.286m3 in terms of capacity.

  • Deep Profile - These buckets are designed to achieve higher output on a worksite. Their buckets range from 0.09m3 to 0.39m3 in terms of capacity.

  • Ditch Maintenance - These wide-body buckets are designed with drainage holes that allow water to escape, giving a better fill factor. Their buckets have a capacity ranging from 0.215m3 to 0.260m3.

  • Grading Bucket - Used for landscaping and bank forming. Their buckets have a capacity ranging from 0.215m3 to 0.260m3.

  • Jaw Bucket - It’s built with a hydraulic jaw that can be used for rough terrain or as a clamp. It is also designed with wear strips for increased strength and resistance to abrasion. It has a capacity of 0.2m3.

Shovels

They are used for loading and unloading loose material, debris, or soil, these are designed to be for maximum performance, compatibility, and durability.

  • General Purpose Shovel - Commonly used shovel for the Backhoe Loader. It comes in different sizes, with its width ranging from 2.2m to 2.4m, and has a capacity ranging from 1m3 to 1.2m3.

  • Heavy Duty Shovel - Commonly used for hard digging operations or rough terrain. It has a width of  2.3m and a capacity of 1.1m3.

  • 6-in-1 Shovel - Built for maximum compatibility, performance, and durability. It can be used for dozing, grading, grabbing, digging, backfilling, and loading/unloading. Like the General Purpose one, it comes in different sizes, ranging from 2.23m to 2.4m in width, while the capacity varies from 1m3 to 1.3m3.

Breakers

There are two types of breakers for the Backhoe Loader: The Top-Mounted Type and the Side-Mounted Type.

Top-mounted hydraulic breakers have a wider working space and better operating view than side-mounted hydraulic breakers. Side-mounted hydraulic breakers are more flexible to reach different conditions/projects like road demolition and construction breaking.

  • Side-Mounted Type, 1,393 Joules
  • Side-Mounted Type, 1,393 Joules
  • Side-Mounted Type, 600 Joules
  • Side-Mounted Type, 855 Joules

The items above are small hydraulic breakers, meaning they are below 1,600 Joules. These breakers are best used for digging fence posts and getting through concrete for small patch jobs.

Drills / Augers

These attachments are used for drilling holes varying only in diameters and depth. It’s best used in erecting poles, fences, anchors, road signs, and even planting trees.

  • 900mm, 20kg, for light to moderate ground conditions.

  • 900mm, 195kg, for difficult ground conditions: compacted soils, heavy clay, asphalt, frozen ground, and fracturable rock.

Forks

Are designed to carry palletized loads and maximize the usage of the machine on the worksite. Its forks can be mounted via a Fork Frame.

The Fork has the capability of lifting a maximum load of 2,000kg and a maximum lifting height of 3.28m.

Compactors

The Backhoe Loader is perfect for road work thus it also comes with a compactor attachment to be mounted on the backhoe.

Dimensions: 305mm x 734mm, Centrifugal force: 16.3 kN, good for road patchworks.

Handheld Tools and Sweepers

As a highly efficient and versatile machine, the Backhoe Loader can work on a variety of tasks with its wide array of attachments whether it’s General or Road Construction projects.

A fun fact about this machine, it can be used in sanitary works in particular in excavating a compost pit for biodegradable wastes and creating a landfill for non-biodegradable ones.

WHAT’S NEXT

Truly a machine of wonders this Backhoe Loader is. One could say it's a multi-tool with an engine. But the processes and attachments are only a certain aspect of this machine.

Let's cover the productivity and efficiency of the machine. (insert link of blog #3)
